The RNLI has released a short film, Float, which aims to show young people the importance of our drowning prevention message, ‘Float to Live’. I am very proud to have played a small part in the team who put this together.
With a spell of hot weather forecast to last into next week, and with heatwave conditions expected, we urge you to please remember and share our Float to Live message.
Through our partnership with the GAA under its Healthy Clubs Programme, the RNLI hopes to give the young people who are most at risk of drowning the water safety advice that could save their lives or the lives of others. The film premiered at Croke Park at the All-Ireland semi-final on 4th July, to a crowd of 83,000 people.
The film shows a young man with his friends, playing football with his local GAA club and enjoying swimming, until one evening a solo dip sees him get into difficulty in the water. Remembering the RNLI advice to Float to Live, he resists the instinct to panic, swim, or thrash about, floats, and survives.
If you find yourself in difficulty in the water, Float to Live:
Lie on your back with your ears submerged in the water
Try to relax and breathe normally
Gently move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat
Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety
Practise floating in a supervised location like a swimming pool
Remember it. Share it. Float to Live.
The RNLI is grateful to all who gave their time and expertise to enable the film to be produced, including Wicklow RNLI, Kilmacanogue GAA, and Banjoman. The charity hopes the film will be widely shared and viewed in the weeks and months ahead, and that it will help to save lives.
