I spent 25 years in the Irish Naval Service. In 2015 I was Chief of the Engineering Department on LÉ Eithne, the flagship, and the first Irish ship sent to the Mediterranean. In 2016 and 2017 I trained the crews who went after us, at sea on their way out. In 2018 I went back in the same job on LÉ Samuel Beckett. You don’t forget what you see out there. Migrant is fiction, but the sea in it is real.
