Fantasy and science fiction by Karol Barry.
Karol Barry is the name Ruairí de Barra writes his fantasy and science fiction under. It is not an invented name: Karol is one of his given middle names, and Barry is the English form of de Barra. He first used it as a nom de plume when his early poems went out to editors, and he now claims it openly. The name keeps a clean line between the worlds: military thrillers, journalism, and poetry appear as Ruairí de Barra; dragons, legions, and lost star-faring empires appear here.
The Vastus Annals
High fantasy with a grimdark edge. Book I of a planned trilogy.
Magic has drained from the world of Vastus. The Great Dragons are gone, the Gods half-forgotten, and the Western Kingdoms spend their soldiers like coin on an endless frontier war. A card cheat sentenced to the penal Legion, an orphan thief the city calls a witch, a young prince who believes the stories, and a reckless shaman whose old rite finally gets an answer.
The West holds by margins and blood, not destiny.
Shattered Gates
Science fiction space opera. Book I: The Cataclysm.
Humanity has crossed the stars before, and lost it all. Its oldest stories survive only in fragments: a sister moon whose arrival drowned the world, and the Wanderer, the death of worlds. Now the scattered worlds of humankind have drifted apart, each certain of its own history. Only the Chroniclers remember how fragile that history is.
