Today’s sentence:
“He read aloud from a torn edition of the Chicago Tribune, for the others on the picket line to hear above the howling wind and the crump of boots in the dirty snow, ‘Says here she’s the most dangerous woman in America’.”
Inspiration and Observation.
Today is workers memorial day. On #WorkersMemorialDay #IWMD25 we remember all those who passed away, became ill or were injured through work-related accidents. One of the most basic of worker’s rights is the right to come home safely again from your day’s work.
The indomitable Mother Jones showed us the way, and her spirit lives on. The poem below is my poor tribute to this incredible woman.
This sentence is my imagining of what courage must have been required march the picket lines on strike in the early days of organised labour. When the Bosses quite literally shot down workers who refused to bow. What heart those braves must have taken, knowing that Mother Jones’ home was there with them, and wherever the fight may be. Solidarity to all workers, past, present, and the generations to come.
Ní neart go cur le chéile!
The sentence lodged for later use as:
“He spoke aloud so the others at the picket line might hear above the howling wind and the sound of workers on the march, ‘Says here she’s the most dangerous woman in America’.”
It evolved as:
- “He read aloud from a torn edition of the Chicago Tribune, so that the others on the picket line might hear above the howling wind and the sound of boots in the snow, ‘Says here she’s the most dangerous woman in America’.”
- “He read aloud from a torn edition of the Chicago Tribune, so the others on the picket line might hear above the howling wind and the crump of boots in the snow, ‘Says here she’s the most dangerous woman in America’.”
- “He read aloud from a torn edition of the Chicago Tribune, for the others on the picket line to hear above the howling wind and the crump of boots in the dirty snow, ‘Says here she’s the most dangerous woman in America’.”
