Work is continuing on this book and hopefully, it will be produced as an employers guide to the enlisted personnel of the Irish Defence Forces as part of support services to veterans.
I will be supported in this effort by Óglaigh Náisiúnta na hÉireann.
Óglaigh Náisiúnta na hÉireann are the recognised body for the representation of National Ex-Servicemen & Women, this includes Defence Forces veterans in Ireland.
Full Membership of ONE is open to any person who has served in The Defence Forces, The Reserve Defence Forces, The Civil Defence, The Red Cross or An Garda Siochana provided they have completed at least one year’s service and have been honourably discharged.
The primary objective of Óglaigh Náisiúnta na hÉireann is to ensure the welfare of ex-service personnel by way of providing accommodation to homeless, elderly or disabled members in need of such domestic accommodation and shelter and other assistance that may be required.
During a particularly bad winter in 1988/1989 a number of destitute ex-servicemen were found dead on the streets of Dublin.
As a result of this, ten members of the organisation raised a mortgage and built a twenty bedroom home for ex-service personnel in Queen Street in Dublin.
Subsequently, smaller homes were opened in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal (2004) and Athlone, Co. Westmeath (2006). In 2005 following the demolition of the original home in Queen Street, a new forty bedroom home was opened in Smithfield, Dublin.
